I am dating myself to say this, but I remember the sexual revolution. It was great and I miss it dearly. But open relationships, non-monogamy, swinging, and one-night stands are now little more than fond memories for those of us who lived through the wild 70’s. For my generation, sexual liberation was a given part of the cultural and political zeitgeist. Today, sex is under wraps like no time since Ozzie and Harriet. Attitudes have changed (for the worse, if you ask me), but the sexual needs of men remain the same as ever. What’s a horny young male to do? Enter the pickup artist (PUA). Thank god. PUAs are a response to a sexually conservatized culture: abstinence is being taught in public schools; religious fundamentalism runs rampant across the land.; people live in fear of sexually transmitted diseases. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Some say that PUAs attract (...)

If the President you trust, your elected official handed you a silver spoon with chocolate in it, but you found out later it was actually pudding mixed with feces. What would you do? Politics are messy and so are the lies often fed to us by our officials to justify certain legislative policies regarding price gouging of; mortgages, real estate, gas, oil and even food.  Food, water and air, something all humans cannot live without. The question is, does any world government, financial institution or corporation have the right to monopolize or privatize these three things essential to our survival as a global human family? On July 4th, the Guardian reported that a "secret" study, by World Bank senior economist Don Mitchell concluded that the recent explosion in biofuels use has driven global food prices up by 75 percent,  a number much higher than estimates from other 'major sources.' The USDA being one of these (...)

@ Stony Brook's AMC Theatre [in plaza next to Borders on Rte. 347] it's Movies for Charity!--time.  Flicks are just a buck!--on Wednesdays.  The money gets donated to The Children's Charity and Will Rogers Institute.  Great!--for kids and for adults who are in touch with their Inner-Child.  Today we saw Shrek The Third; last week we saw Alvin & The Chipmunks; Next week is the Bee Movie!--and I'm anticipating the Bee Movie because I have a special connection with bees--yes, they crawl on my fingers and don't sting.  When I was a little girl I had one bad sting, but it didn't cause me to be possessed with fear of bees--to the contrary; I adore, love, and totally respect them.  Oh...so long as my daddy doesn't need me in his office that day--I can see it.  He called yesterday to say he wants me this week and the beginning of next week.  So--I've been contemplating on the word (...)

"A house without books is like a room without windows" --- Chinese Proverb It would only be natural, I think, that a writer would also be a voracious reader. From a writer’s standpoint, it is a great way to “study” writing by examining the various techniques of many different writers. But as a human being, reading is also a way to open the windows to the world and to maybe see something that you never thought was there before. Reading is a great way to blow the cobwebs off your mind and let the world in. It has been said, according to various studies, that reading in America has been on a steady decline for decades. I’m not sure how true that is. On a day to day basis, here in New York City, you see many people reading books, magazines, newspapers on the subway, in the parks or in (...)

Lately I have noticed that I have begun using text messaging as my primary form of communication with my friends.  I will text message them prior to calling to see if they are available to actually speak on the phone.  I prefer to text message as I feel this is slightly less invasive than the phone ringing and let's be honest, how many people actually check their voicemail and listen to the message?  I have a friend who we will call Maggie.  Maggie really doesn't like to receive text messages.  She will not engage in a text message conversation.  She especially doesn't like to receive text messages from the guy(s) she dates unless it is a "quick" text message informing her that you will be late for your date with her.  In today's world, where everyone is multitasking--answering the phone at work, responding to emails from clients/coworkers, instant messaging with your (...)
